Lebanese armed political group Hezbollah announced on the 25th (local time) that it had completed the first phase of retaliatory attacks against Israel.

According to Al Jazeera and The Times of Israel (TOI), Hezbollah issued a statement on the same day, saying that the first phase of retaliatory attacks against Israel for the death of Commander Fuad Shukr had been successfully concluded.

Hezbollah claimed that it had attacked 11 Israeli military bases with more than 320 rockets that day. Drones were also reportedly used in the attacks. The targets included the Meron base and four other locations in the Golan Heights.

As Hezbollah announced that the first phase of the attack was complete, the fighting with Israel today appears to be entering a calm phase. In relation to this, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said, “We are not seeking an all-out war.”

However, the Israeli side emphasized that it is prepared to respond depending on how the situation develops. In addition, Minister Katz is said to have contacted counterparts from around 10 countries that day and asked them to support Israel against Hezbollah and Iran.

Earlier that day, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced through X (formerly Twitter) that they had carried out targeted airstrikes in Lebanon as a preemptive response to Hezbollah’s attacks. The explanation was that Hezbollah was preparing attacks targeting Israeli civilians.

Hezbollah later issued a statement saying it was retaliating for the killing of its commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut on July 30, and that it had launched a large-scale drone and rocket attack on Israel.

In Israel, the situation has become more urgent, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convening a meeting of his security cabinet and Defense Minister Yoav Galland declaring a nationwide state of emergency for the next 48 hours. Shelters have also been opened in northern Israel.

The IDF further issued a statement following the incident, saying that around 100 Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets were deployed to destroy thousands of Hezbollah launchers and strike 40 Hezbollah launch sites that day.

The IDF said it was “ready to do whatever is necessary to defend our civilians and the state of Israel.”
