The new direction Gold set “inevitably” led to the experimental New Wave, the science fiction literary movement that defined the 1960s.” – David Kyle

Galaxy Science Fiction was an American mid-sized science fiction magazine published in Boston from 1950 to 1980.
It was founded by a Franco-Italian company, World Editions, which wanted to enter the American market. World Editions hired HL Gold as editor, who quickly turned Galaxy into the leading science fiction magazine of its time, focusing on stories about social issues rather than technology.
HL Gold published many notable stories during his tenure, including Ray Bradbury’s “The Fireman” which was later expanded as “Fahrenheit 451”; “The Puppet Masters” by Robert A. Heinlein; and “The Demolished Man” by Alfred Bester.
Frederik Pohl took over as editor, officially starting in late 1961, although he had been doing most of the production work for some time.
