Iranian officials this week signaled that a promised retaliatory strike on Israel was being postponed.

According to the Washington Post, the strike is intended to be a response to the alleged assassination of Hamas terrorist group leader Ismail Haniyeh, for which Iran holds Israel responsible.

In the weeks following the attack, there were calls in Tehran for devastating retaliation. But according to a statement from Iran’s UN mission, the current plan is for a “carefully considered response” that would not disrupt a possible ceasefire in Gaza.

The spokesman for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naini, said Iran was ready to wait, stressing that “the waiting period could be long.”

Part of the reason for these statements is the US flexing its military muscle in the region, which acts as a deterrent to Iran, and the influence of the “moderate camp” led by newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian, who seeks cooperation with the West rather than confrontation.

Recall that the Iranian delegation to the UN revealed details of a possible attack on Israel. They emphasized that the response to the elimination of Haniyeh would be strategic and unexpected, and could include both a ground and air attack. At the same time, they noted that the strike would be coordinated in such a way as to avoid a negative impact on the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza.

Cursor also reported that Iran intends to hold Israel accountable through the courts.
