“I don’t know why I should still answer – I am participating in the Seimas elections, I have a single mandate. We are organizing a very important campaign, in which, in my opinion, certain issues determining the direction of Lithuania will be decided,” G. Landsbergis told reporters at the Adutiškis border crossing on Monday, when asked if he intends to remain in the parliament after the Seimas elections.
“I really have doubts as to whether we will be able to ensure the western direction of Lithuania with a certain choice of the voters. We see that anti-Semitic political forces (…) sometimes even pro-Russian or anti-Ukrainian, they gain confidence, they find refuge in the company of major parties, without denying that those parties can form a coalition,” he emphasized.
Therefore, the politician once again calls on all pro-Western political forces to clearly define red lines in advance when forming coalitions.
“I think this is a really dangerous precedent. And today, it seems to me that all political forces for a democratic, free, pro-Western Lithuania should state very clearly what coalitions there will be, how they will be formed, on the basis of which values they will be formed. I think that the Homeland Union has a very important task here,” he emphasized.
G. Landsbergis has already expressed his fear that the arithmetic of the upcoming Seimas elections may turn out in such a way that the leader of the new ruling coalition will not be the chairwoman of the Social Democrats Vilija Blinkevičūtė, but the leader of Nemunas Aušras, Remigijus Žemaitaitis.
ELTA reminds that the party “Nemunas Aušra” led by R. Žemaitaitis has recently been often mentioned as one of the likely members of the new ruling majority. Such speeches were reinforced by V. Blinkevičiūtė, the chairperson of the Social Democrats, who are considered favorites in the Seimas elections, hinting that she would not rule out the possibility of forming a governing coalition with “Nemunas Aušra”.
Such a statement of the social democrat was publicly criticized, emphasizing that the leader of the “Nemunas aushra” party, R. Žemaitaitis, was found by the Constitutional Court to have broken the oath of a member of the Seimas and grossly violated the Constitution due to anti-Semitic statements. After such a verdict of the CT, the politician himself refused the mandate of a member of the Seimas.
Responding to V. Blinkevičiūtė’s speech, Speaker of the Seimas and head of Liberal Movement Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen stated that she would not see her political strength in a coalition with “Nemunas Aušra”, while conservative leader G. Landsbergis called on parties on the left and right of the center to negotiate after the autumn elections prevent radical forces from coming to power.
