The arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov could be the “beginning of the end” for the messenger.
Ukrainian cybersecurity expert Konstantin Korsun expressed this opinion on air on a Ukrainian TV channel.
“It seems to me that this is only the beginning of the end. The only question is how quickly this end will come. Of course, the next step could be extradition requests from the US and other countries that have similar claims against the owner of Telegram,” he emphasized.
The expert noted that in some countries, employees of government agencies are already prohibited from using this messenger. He also calls for abandoning Telegram, believing that it is already unsafe.
According to him, Telegram is the last on the list of messengers when it comes to security. There are many more secure alternatives, such as Signal, which is widely used. “And if we talk about Telegram as a social network, then Viber and WhatsApp can be used for channels,” Korsun added.
Let us recall that on August 24, the CEO and founder of Telegram was detained in France. According to media reports, he was charged with improper moderation of the messenger and refusal to cooperate with French law enforcement agencies. The Telegram team released a statement emphasizing that they operate within the framework of EU laws, and Durov has no reason to hide anything. Durov’s detention has international resonance, as it allows him to strike a blow against criminal groups using Telegram for illegal activities. The platform has long attracted the attention of law enforcement agencies as the main channel for organized crime.
