He reminded that the Polish authorities have done everything possible to provide military aid to Ukraine in the amount of several billion euros. At the same time, he also called maintaining Poland’s defense capabilities a top priority. “Our Ukrainian partners must understand this,” said the head of the Polish Ministry of Defense.
According to him, the decision to transfer to Ukraine the MiG-29 aircraft currently in the possession of the Polish Air Force can be taken only after the country’s air force receives new combat aircraft. Specifically, we are talking about the F-35 fighter jets, which Warsaw has ordered from the USA – they will be delivered no earlier than in 2026. Until then, Polish MiGs will be needed to protect its airspace, Kosińak-Kamiš emphasized.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that he would like to get Poland to agree to hand over Soviet-style fighter jets to Ukraine. “We really need your MiGs,” the Ukrainian leader said.
Zelensky also suggested that Poland could help Ukraine protect the skies over its western regions by shooting down Russian missiles and drones during major airstrikes. The latest such massive strike was carried out by the Russian armed forces overnight on Monday, attacking 15 regions of the country with more than a hundred missiles and around a hundred attack drones. Dozens of infrastructure objects were damaged, and there are dead and injured. Poland raised its air force during this attack.
At the beginning of August, it became known that Ukraine received the first ten US F-16 fighter jets from its Western partners. After the massive Russian airstrike, Zelensky announced that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were preparing to use these fighter jets against Russia.
