The LPGA Tour, which has completed its schedule of tournaments in Europe, returns to the United States to continue its season.
The LPGA Tour will hold the FM Championship at TPC Boston (par 72) in Norton, Massachusetts, USA, starting on the 29th (Korean time). LPGA Tour players returned to the United States after completing the ISPS Handa Women’s Open and AIG Women’s Open (major tournaments) held back-to-back in Scotland following the Paris Olympics held in France this month.
The FM Championship is the first tournament added to the LPGA Tour this season, and its total prize money is $3.8 million (about 5.05 billion won). This is the largest total prize money excluding the LPGA Tour major tournaments and the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. The total prize money of the AIG Women’s Open, a major tournament that ended on the 26th, was $9.5 million (about 12.64 billion won). The total prize money of the CME Group Tour Championship, held in November, is $11 million (about 14.64 billion won). The FM Championship organizers announced on their website, “We plan to increase the total prize money to $5 million (about 6.65 billion won) by 2028.”
On the 27th, the LPGA Tour selected Jin Young Ko as the player to watch at the FM Championship through their website. The LPGA Tour said, “Jin Young Ko, the former world number one in women’s golf, is the player who is attracting the most attention in this tournament,” and “Jin Young Ko is once again trying to win her first game of the season.”
Jin Young Ko, who has a total of 15 LPGA Tour wins (2 major tournaments), has won the LPGA Tour every year from 2017 to last year. In 2017, while playing on the Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association (KLPGA) Tour, Jin Young Ko won the LPGA Tour KEB Hana Bank Championship held in Korea. By winning this tournament, she qualified for the LPGA Tour and debuted on the LPGA Tour the following year.
This season, Ko Jin-young has recorded five top-10 finishes, but has yet to win. In the last major tournament of the season, the AIG Women’s Open, she missed the cut with a score of 10 over par through the second round. As a result, Ko Jin-young’s world ranking dropped from 3rd to 6th. Recently, Ko Jin-young said on her Instagram, “The result of the AIG Women’s Open was very disappointing, and it made me think again about what golf is,” and “I learned what my strengths and weaknesses are through this tournament.”
Yang Hee-young, the only Korean player to lift the LPGA Tour trophy this year, is aiming for her second win of the season at this tournament. Yang Hee-young won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, a major tournament in June.
Meanwhile, world No. 1 Nelly Korda, No. 2 Lilia Bou (both from the US) and No. 3 Lydia Ko (New Zealand) will take a break and not participate in the FM Championship.
