Nuno Borges wasted no time and confirmed his favoritism against Federico Coria to comfortably secure his passage to the second round of the main singles draw at the US Open for the second time in his career.
The best Portuguese tennis player currently (34th in the ATP ranking, his highest ranking ever) only needed three sets to defeat the Argentine (79th and former top 50) by 6-2, 6-4, and 6-1 in a match that concluded with 39 winners, including eight aces.
This is the second occasion on which Borges has surpassed the first round of the US Open, the first Grand Slam tournament where he wins matches in the main draw in different years.
To improve upon his performance in 2022, his debut year, the national number one will need to replicate the victory from March (on his way to defending his title at the ATP Challenger 175 in Phoenix) against Thanasi Kokkinakis. The Australian, currently ranked 86th, pulled off one of the surprises of the day by eliminating Stefanos Tsitsipas.
