The Knesset Committee, headed by MK Nir Orbach, decided to recommend to the Knesset plenum to elect MK Yaakov Asher from Torah Judaism as interim deputy speaker of the Knesset.
So far, nine deputies have served as Speaker of the Knesset: from the coalition Eitan Ginzburg (Blue and White) and Mansour Abbas (RAAM), Zvi Hauser (New Hope), Emily Moati (Labor), Jida Rinawi-Zoabi (Meretz) and MK Yevgeny Soba (Yisrael Beiteinu) and from the opposition David Bitan (Likud), Yaakov Margi (Shas) and Ahmad Tibi (joint).
In addition, in a discussion held this afternoon, the committee approved the membership of MKs Yinon Azulai of Shas and Moshe Gafni and Meir Porush from Torah Judaism to the Knesset Joint Budget Committee and the Defense Budget Joint Committee.
Committee chairman MK Nir Orbach said: “I welcome the move. This is an important move.” MK Moshe Gafni said that the appointment of MK Asher is for one year from the day of the election.

MK Boaz Toporovsky expressed hope that “this is the beginning of a process, of ending the boycotts of the opposition in the Knesset.” Gafni replied to Toporovsky: “You also need to be flexible, not just us.
The committee’s spokesman noted that this is a temporary presidency of the Knesset, until a permanent presidency is elected. The election was approved unanimously.
The chairman of Torah Judaism, Moshe Gafni, said at the end of the debate: “I thank the leaders of the opposition factions and MK Bezalel Smutrich who allowed the appointment of Torah Jew MK Yaakov Asher as deputy speaker of the Knesset.”
