Grigor Dimitrov showed an improvement in his game and is already in the third round and the last of the “Grand Slam” tournaments for this season.
The best Bulgarian tennis player of all time allowed a slight relaxation in the third set, but still eliminated Rinki Hijikata 6:1, 6:1, 7:6 (7:4) in the US Open. This is the third win in as many games against this Australian opponent.
The previous days were at the beginning of the season in Brisbane, where Dimitrov won the 9th title of his career, and more recently at the “Masters 1000” in Montreal.
The oppressive heat of 30 degrees in New York did not have much effect on Dimitrov’s performance. On the contrary, after the second set, Hijikata took a break of almost 11 minutes, which surprised even the chair judge Arno Gabas.
After the game resumed, Grigor made a breakthrough, but in the very next game he lost his serve. That’s how it came to the tiebreak and our tennis player was able to end the match only on his sixth match point.
In the next round, Dimitrov awaits the winner of the meeting between Sebastian Baez (Arge) and Talon Grikspor (Nid).
A year ago at the US Open, Grigor also reached the third round, where he was eliminated by Alexander Zverev (Ger).
The Bulgarian star is 15-1 against opponents outside the top 50 in the world Grand Slam rankings since the start of 2023. His only loss came to No. 69 Nuno Borges (Por) in the third round of the Australian Open this season.
