The competition was held from August 23 to 25 in the legendary Southern Shaolin Monastery in Fujin and in the metropolis of Fuzhou – China. The coach of the USHU Sports Club – Montana also won a silver medal in the Nien show discipline. Assenov was also awarded with a special plaque for third place in the tetraathlon. The distinction is the result of his complex performance in 4 different disciplines: Cham Kyu, Bu Ji, Wooden Dummy and Chi Sau Duel.
In the first Wing Chun World Championship, more than 170 masters, selected among more than 1000 participants from 30 countries, competed. Five Bulgarians from the school of master Stanislav Bagalev also qualified for the finals. As a key figure for the development of this martial art in Bulgaria and in the European Wing Tchun Organization (EWTO), Sifu Bagalev was a judge and lecturer at the event.
Asen Asenov is the creator, trainer and competitor of the Chinese Martial Arts Club in Montana. He graduated from the National Sports Academy “Vasil Levski” – Sofia, with the professional qualification “Wushu Coach”. Sihing Asenov’s interest in martial arts was provoked by the movies. He started with kyokushin karate in Montana under Petko Enchevski. While he was a student at the Music High School in Pleven, he trained in Jeet Kune with Grand Master Lubomir Yordanov. With the Chinese martial art of Wing Tchun, which is the basis of the style of the famous Hollywood action hero Bruce Lee, Assenov began to deal while studying at the Music Academy in Plovdiv after 1992. In 2006, he became a member of the European Wing Tchun Organization ( EWTO), whose headquarters for Bulgaria is in Plovdiv, and in 2009 created a club on the Chinese martial art Wing Chun in the Youth Home. Competitors from Montana participate in tournaments on behalf of the club in Plovdiv before the USHU – Montana Sports Club was officially registered in our city. Asen Asenov has a first technical degree awarded by EWTO. It is equivalent to a first dan black belt in Japanese martial arts. He is a multiple republican champion in Wing Tchun and in the “Pushing Hands” discipline of Tai Chi. After internal qualifications, Assenov won the right to participate in the first World Wing Chun Championship in China.
The Southern Shaolin Wing Chun World Championship is an event that aims to deepen the connection of practitioners and fans with its philosophy and Chinese cultural practices. It encourages dialogue and popularizes Wing Chun. This martial art originated from the Southern Shaolin Monastery. It is believed to have been developed by the nun Wu Mei. It gained worldwide popularity thanks to Ip Man and Bruce Lee. In 2014, the Fuzhou Wing Chun Federation was recognized as the representative and bearer of the original Wing Chun martial art, which was established as China’s national intangible cultural heritage.
