Six companies, including Korea Zinc, Korea Gas Safety Corporation Ulsan Headquarters, Isu Chemical, DIG Airgas, Air Products Korea, and SPG Industry, signed a ‘MOU to Strengthen Cooperation in Underground Pipe Safety Management’.

Korea Zinc is strengthening its activities to reduce the risk of underground pipe damage accidents in the Onsan Industrial Complex. Since the second half of last year, large-scale excavation work has been carried out, and various damages have occurred, such as the protective coating of underground pipes in the Onsan Industrial Complex being peeled off. In particular, as concerns have been raised about leakage and explosion due to damage, efforts to prevent accidents are required. Accordingly, Korea Zinc has decided to strengthen the safety management level of small warehouses in cooperation with the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, etc.

Korea Zinc announced on the 29th that it signed a ‘MOU for strengthening cooperation in underground pipeline safety management’ with the Ulsan headquarters of Korea Gas Safety Corporation, Isu Chemical, DIG Air Gas, Air Products Korea, and SPG Industry.

Currently, the Ulsan area is undergoing large-scale excavation work, making the need for safety management of underground pipes more important than ever. In particular, there are concerns that major accidents such as leaks and explosions may occur due to damage to the pipes during excavation work.

In this situation, six companies including Korea Zinc decided to utilize their capabilities and resources to maintain a high level of safety for underground sewage pipes and to respond quickly in the event of an unexpected accident to minimize damage to life and property. Specifically, they will jointly promote mutual technical exchanges for safety management of gas facilities (including buried pipes), mutual information exchanges for safety management in the event of unauthorized excavation and the discovery of hazardous elements, and information education on gas laws and inspection standards.

Korea Zinc has been proactively committed to the safety management of gas supply facilities. It has been working to improve the level of safety management in the Onsan Industrial Complex, such as by promising to share information with DIG Air Gas on a regular basis since 2022. This MOU is the result of such measures to strengthen accident prevention.

Lee Eung-yeol, head of the petrochemical department at the Ulsan headquarters of the Korea Gas Safety Corporation, said, “Although underground pipeline accidents have recently been decreasing, they can still occur,” adding, “We expect this business agreement to contribute to creating a safe excavation work environment.”

A Korea Zinc official said, “Based on this MOU, the participating companies will work closely together to create a safe industrial environment in Onsan Industrial Complex,” adding, “We believe that this will be an opportunity to improve each other’s safety management capabilities through active technology and information exchange.”
