On Wednesday, before midnight, officers of the Kalvarija border checkpoint of the VSAT Varėna border team stopped an Opel Corsa leaving Lithuania for inspection at the village of Salaperaugis (Kalvarija municipality), on the Marijampolė-Suvalkai road. The French-registered vehicle was driven by a 30-year-old Afghan citizen with a temporary residence permit in France.

During the document check, the driver’s license, allegedly issued to him in Albania, caused doubts.

After inspecting it with a document scanning device, VSAT officials found that the driver’s license is suspected to be forged. Its microtext and optically variable element are simulated, no UV protection and no laser engraving.

The man being interviewed claimed that he attended driving courses in Albania and paid 300 US dollars for his driver’s license.

The driver of the Opel Corsa was detained by border guards for 48 hours and imprisoned.

A pre-trial investigation has been launched at the VSAT Varėna border station regarding the falsification of a document or possession of it, which is headed by the prosecutor of the Marijampolė district prosecutor’s office of the Kaunas District Prosecutor’s Office. The law provides for arrest or imprisonment of up to 4 years for such a criminal act.

In the near future, it will be decided what preventive measure to assign to the Afghan citizen.
