Severe Flood Warnings Issued as Typhoon Triggers Rising Water Levels in Saitama Prefecture

Due to heavy rain from the typhoon, the Iruma River and Koaze River (Iruma-gawa, Koaze-gawa) flowing through Saitama Prefecture have swollen, and a flood danger information (equivalent to warning level 4) was announced at 1:25 AM.

At the Kogaya water level observation station on the Iruma River (Kawagoe City), it has reached the “flood danger water level.” There is a danger of flooding due to levee breaches, and flooding is possible in Saitama City, Kawagoe City, Asaka City, Shiki City, Wako City, Fujimi City, Sakado City, Fujimino City, and Kawajima Town in Hiki District.

Additionally, at the Yahata Bridge water level observation station on the Koaze River (Kawagoe City), it has also reached the “flood danger water level.” There is a risk of flooding due to levee breaches on the Koaze River, and areas such as Kawagoe City, Sakado City, and Kawajima Town in Hiki District may experience flooding.

It is dangerous to go and see the river conditions, so please refrain from doing so. Please ensure your safety by moving to upper floors that are less prone to flooding.

Increased rainfall: Beware of landslides

In the surrounding areas of the Manose River basin, there is a very high risk of landslides due to continuous heavy rain.

As of 8:10 AM, Kagoshima Prefecture and the Kagoshima Local Meteorological Observatory have jointly issued landslide warning information for the following areas.

　Kagoshima City, Makurazaki City, Akune City, Ibusuki City, Satsumasendai City, Satsumasendai City Koshikijima, Hioki City, Ichiki-Kushikino City, Minamisatsuma City, Minamikyushu City, Aira City, Satsuma Town

Residents in areas prone to landslides near cliffs and rivers should evacuate early and pay attention to evacuation advisories and information issued by local municipalities.

Continuing rain even after special warning switched to alert

In Hiroshima City, a heavy rain special warning was issued yesterday, August 13 (Friday), but it has since been downgraded to an alert. Even after the switch to an alert, intermittent heavy rain is continuing.

In the coming hours after the rain stops, high water levels may persist for several hours to days, so please do not go to check the river conditions. Additionally, there is a risk of increased water levels and flooding in tributaries that cannot drain, so caution is necessary even in areas away from the main river.

Throughout Hiroshima Prefecture, caution against heavy rain is necessary today. Tomorrow, there is expected to be a temporary lull, but intermittent rain is predicted again in the first half of next week.

Stay away from rivers

A southern wind between Typhoon No. 10 (Sansan) and high pressure is causing intermittent heavy rain even in Saitama Prefecture, with some areas receiving over 100mm of rain in 24 hours.

In Oita Prefecture, a linear precipitation zone has been detected, with intense rain of up to 110mm per hour in some areas. Intermittent heavy rain is likely to continue into the morning.

Even if the rain weakens in the future, high water levels may persist for several hours, so please do not go check the condition even if you are concerned. Additionally, there is a risk of increased water levels and flooding in tributaries that cannot drain, necessitating caution even in areas far from large rivers.

Please follow evacuation instructions from local authorities, and if you reside in flood-prone areas, evacuate to a safe location without waiting for level 5. If the safety of the route to the evacuation site is uncertain, ensure your safety in an upper floor of your home, away from slopes.
