According to initial police reports, the explosion occurred during quality assurance at the explosives manufacturer’s premises on Kaiserstrasse in Troisdorf (North Rhine-Westphalia). Two workers are said to have been seriously injured.
Around 9:32 a.m. firefighters were notified of an accident at work, Lars Gödel, head of the Troisdorf fire department, confirmed to Bild. At the scene, rescuers found two workers who were seriously injured by the explosion. They had already left the building by themselves.
Both workers (aged 26, 61) from Cologne were treated at the scene by EMS and an emergency doctor before being airlifted to nearby accident hospitals.
The criminal police assume that the explosion was caused by an accident at work.
“The said building was significantly damaged during the incident, so our rescue services could no longer enter it,” the fire chief reported. “We simply cut off the electricity supply to the building.”
Emergency service chaplains were also called upon. The Criminal Investigation Department is currently on the scene. The cause of the explosion is under investigation. According to the police, there are no signs of a crime at this time. The Occupational Safety and Health Service was contacted.
“In the morning, the so-called deflagration caused a chemical reaction. All the effects were limited to the production workshop, there was no danger to the residents,” David Voskuhl, the press representative of the Diehl Defense company, told Bild.
A spokesman told about the work at the construction site: DynITEC, a company owned by Diehl Defence, is in contact with the authorities. Troisdorf manufactures small components, about the size of a fingertip, that are used to ignite rocket explosives. Not all rockets are made here.”
Fire at the Diehl Defense factory in Berlin
At the beginning of May, a factory belonging to the Diehl company, which produces weapons for Ukraine, caught fire. 160 firefighters battled the biggest fire in Berlin in years. However, the building completely collapsed.
As in June reported Bild, the German government is investigating the version that Russia is responsible for the fire at the factory in Berlin’s Lichterfeld. The criminal police believe that the current fire in Troisdorf was an industrial accident.
