International concern over escalating tensions in Libya

The UN Security Council expressed its concern over recent developments in Libya, calling on all actors to urgently refrain from taking any unilateral actions that could increase tensions.

The Council’s statement called on all Libyan leaders and political, economic and security institutions to calm tensions and refrain from using or threatening to use force.

The statement also urged the Libyan parties to avoid any military actions that might jeopardize Libya’s fragile stability and the security of civilians, as well as the 2020 ceasefire agreement, stressing the importance of achieving accountability.

Regarding the economic crisis, the Council stressed to the concerned parties the need to reach a consensual solution to the current crisis related to the Central Bank.

The Council called on all political leaders to fulfill their commitments and obligations based on the political agreement and based on the rules of the 6+6 Committee and to participate fully and in good faith and without preconditions, and to make concessions to achieve progress in the political process under the leadership of the United Nations.

The Council also renewed its full support for the work of the United Nations Mission to de-escalate tensions, maintain stability and enhance confidence, stressing its support for the appointment by the Secretary-General of a new Special Representative for Libya as soon as possible.
