Products from the US companies Intel and AMD, as well as the European companies Infineon Technologies AG, STMicroelectronics NV and NXP Semiconductors NV, are among the most frequently mentioned in the customs documents. Also appearing on the scene, albeit to a lesser extent, are names such as Taiwanese Realtek Semiconductor and Chinese manufacturers.
In 2021, before the recent conflict between Moscow and Kyiv broke out, Russia imported semiconductors worth $1.8 billion. In 2022, the year the war began, the import figure climbed to $1.8 billion. 2.5 billion dollars. Now, as we can see, in the first nine months of 2023, imports amounted to 1.7 billion dollars.
The big question in this context is how Russia is managing to maintain such high levels of imports amid the sanctions. In principle, there is no evidence to support that major technology companies are violating trade restrictions, something that, if it happens, could bring difficult consequences for them.
