News has been reported that a school of dead fish has washed up on a port city in Greece, forcing tourists away and causing inconvenience to residents.

According to Reuters and other news agencies on the 29th (local time), the port of Volos, a port city in central Greece, has recently been filled with dead fish carcasses.

The entire harbor was covered in a silvery sheen due to the dead fish, and the rotting bodies were said to have created an extremely foul odor, making it difficult to breathe in the nearby areas.

Beachfront shops that were preparing to welcome tourists are reportedly closed. A restaurant owner 10km from the port said in an interview with the media, “Our sales this summer have dropped by 80% due to the decrease in tourists,” and “It’s too late to put up curtains or take things down because the peak tourist season is already over.”

As the stench and complaints continued, authorities and residents took it upon themselves to collect the fish carcasses. They said they had collected 40 tons of carcasses in the past 24 hours, and the total weight of the carcasses is estimated at 100 tons.

Experts believe that this situation is due to the effects of the great flood that occurred in Thessaly last year. At that time, the water in the surrounding lakes swelled greatly due to the flood, but this year, it decreased rapidly, causing freshwater fish to go out to the sea. However, the analysis is that these fish died in large numbers because they could not survive in the sea.

“The government did not even take the necessary measures, such as putting up a net to protect the fish before they reached the port,” Volos Mayor Achilleas Beos said at a press conference.

The Volos Regional Chamber of Commerce also said in a statement that “the strong stench along the coast is repulsive to both residents and visitors and is damaging the tourism industry.”
