6.1 magnitude earthquake hits El Salvador

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) reported a 6.1 magnitude earthquake off the coast of La Libertad, 70.0 km south of Playa Mizata, but there is no threat of a tsunami.

“REVISED DATA: Earthquake of magnitude 6.1, off the coast of La Libertad. 70.0 km south of Playa Mizata. Depth 13 km. [2024-08-28, 15:57:55]. UPDATE: There is no threat of a tsunami for El Salvador,” the Environment Ministry said.

Apart from the strong earthquake, other smaller ones have been recorded, such as: Earthquake of magnitude 4.2, off the coast of La Libertad. 72.0 km south of Playa Mizata.

According to MARN, the following were recorded: earthquake of magnitude 4.6, off the coast of La Libertad. 67.0 km south of Playa Mizata. Depth 25 km. earthquake of magnitude 3.9, off the coast of La Libertad. 70.0 km south of Playa Mizata. Depth 15 km.

“Three earthquakes occurred this afternoon off the coast of La Libertad. The first was magnitude 6.1, at 3:57 pm, with a depth of 13 km. There is no threat of a tsunami for El Salvador. The second, magnitude 4.2 at 4:11 pm, with a depth of 14 kilometers; and the third, magnitude 4.6, at 4:16 pm, with a depth of 25 kilometers,” said the head of MARN, Fernando López.
