Workers’ representatives met in Samborondón and rejected the Government’s statements against collective agreements.
The Unitary Central of Workers of Ecuador (CUT) held its 2024 National Convention, in which they agreed to seek legal measures to protect the collective contracts of the state-owned companies CNT, CNEL, CELEC and Petroecuador.
These collective agreements will be reviewed by the Office of the Comptroller General of the State, following a request made by the Ministry of Labor, through its principal, Ivone Núñez.
The CUT convention was held on the morning of July 13, 2024 at Arena Park, a complex located in Samborondón, attended by nearly 3,000 members of the organization.
During the meeting, the actions of the National Government were questioned, since – according to their perception – workers’ rights would be violated. “The convention is being held in response to the need to debate and resolve joint actions to confront the systematic attack against the right to unionization and collective bargaining by the Ministry of Labor,” the invitation to the event highlighted.
Measures to be taken by the CUT
Richard Gómez, president of the CUT, mentioned that during the meeting it was agreed to present an ‘amicus curiae’ action before the Constitutional Court, so that they can be heard regarding the issue of collective agreements.
Likewise, an action of unconstitutionality is intended to be filed against Ministerial Agreement MDT-2024-080, which established the review of collective contracts in public companies and GADS. According to Gómez, the collective contracts have already been reviewed previously by the Comptroller’s Office. Finally, he announced that if they are not heard, they could go to the International Labor Organization (ILO).
