CNN and the South China Morning Post reported on the 1st that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has put strong pressure on the United States to allow it to attack military targets behind Russian territory.
According to the media, President Zelensky made the call in a video address the night before, saying that six people were killed and 97 injured in Kharkiv on the 30th due to Russian aerial bomb attacks, and that there were more airstrikes on the 31st.
President Zelenskyy claimed that “the only way to avoid such damage is to strike military airfields, bases and logistics centers (deep in Russian territory).”
President Zelensky said, “Ukraine is discussing this with our partners every day and trying to persuade them.”
President Zelensky stressed that removing Russian guided bombs from Ukrainian skies would be “a powerful step that would force Russia to end the war and pursue a just peace.”
He appealed to the United States, Britain, France and Germany, saying they needed “capacity to truly and fully protect Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” and stressed that “long-range strike capability and permission to use Western long-range artillery and missiles is urgently needed.”
The United States has provided more than $50 billion in military assistance to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in late February 2022.
However, it limited the use of American weapons to only defensive cross-border operations within Ukrainian territory.
President Zelensky added, without elaborating, that he and his representatives had “presented all the necessary details” to their partners.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerou stressed the need to strike the Russian airfield used in the attack on the Ukrainian city, saying it was located deep inside Russia, in an interview with CNN during his visit to the United States.
