This week, the Nations League is already starting its 4th edition. The Swiss national team will be in action in Denmark on Thursday to kick off in the highest league. After a closed training session on Tuesday and Wednesday, coach Murat Yakin’s team will fly to Copenhagen on Wednesday afternoon.

The match is scheduled for the following day at 20:45. Already on Sunday, Switzerland will host European champion Spain in Geneva (both matches live on SRF two).

The UEFA’s national tournament presents itself in a slightly new, more comprehensive format. For the first time, quarter-finals will be held in League A. The additional knockout round in March is intended by UEFA to serve as a link between the end of the group stage (November) and the final tournament (June). This also means that the runners-up of League A will now qualify for the knockout phase. Previously, only the four group winners competed in the final tournament.

Playoffs provide more rotation

Furthermore, it will no longer just be the last-placed team in each group that gets relegated. Teams finishing in 3rd place in League A and the runners-up of League B will play playoff matches for promotion or relegation (with home and away matches), the same applies to the 3rd place teams in League B and the 2nd place teams in League C. There will also be playoff matches for promotion or relegation between the two best 4th place teams in League C and the two runners-up of League D.

In the very first week, there will be exciting matches like France – Italy (6.9.), Ireland – England (7.9.) and Netherlands – Germany (10.9.).
