“I asked if there was an alternative to increasing the number of medical schools, but (Lee Jae-myung) answered, ‘There is none.’” (People Power Party Representative Han Dong-hoon)

The ruling and opposition parties argued over the failure to come up with countermeasures for the medical gap during the meeting between Representative Han and Representative Lee on the 2nd, making different claims. As the policy committee chairmen of both parties are set to begin preparing follow-up measures in earnest ahead of the Chuseok holiday, there are also observations that difficulties are expected in finding a solution.

At the Supreme Council meeting that day, Representative Han said, “We shared the same view that the public is feeling uneasy about the current medical situation,” and “This is not a political issue, but a national health issue, and we agreed (with Representative Lee) that we should come up with good alternatives.” Representative Han said, “I said, ‘The issue of increasing the number of students in 2025 has already been resolved, and if we come to an alternative of reducing the number of students due to legal restrictions, wouldn’t it cause too much confusion?’ The Democratic Party agreed with that point.” He continued, “When I explained the alternative of postponing the increase in (medical schools) for only one year, 2026, I asked the Democratic Party if they had a better alternative, but they said, ‘We don’t have any special alternatives. ’” In response, a key member of the Democratic Party said, “This is something that the ruling party, which has the executive power, should do.”

On this day, a representative visited the Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital in Seoul privately to check the emergency room operation status.

Regarding the so-called “emergency room roundabout” problem caused by the medical vacuum, the representative criticized, “The most serious issue is the emergency room issue,” and “They say there is no problem, or that they will win if they just hold out for six months, and they think it is a competition even though it is not a war.”

A key Democratic Party official said in a phone call that day, “During the closed-door meeting the day before, Representative Lee proposed forming a National Assembly-level countermeasure committee to resolve the medical crisis issue, but (Representative Han) said, ‘That’s a bit difficult,’ so the agreement was reflected to the extent of preparing a National Assembly-level countermeasure.”
