US Open: Titleholder out – Gauff stumbles once again against compatriot Navarro – Sports – SRF

“I gave it my all,” stated Coco Gauff after a largely poor performance and a loss in 3 sets in the fight for a place in the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows. “Mentally and emotionally, I couldn’t do more this time.”

The local star competed as the titleholder for the first time at a Grand Slam tournament. She was unable to meet the high expectations of the fans upon her return to the “Big Apple,” as she was far from her top form. She accumulated 19 double faults against Emma Navarro.
And thus it turned into a bitter déjà vu for the young star: Navarro had already defeated Gauff earlier this year in the Wimbledon round of 16. After her confirmation in New York with 6:3, 4:6, 6:3, the Spaniard Paula Badosa (WTA 29) awaits in the quarter-finals. The 23-year-old Navarro had never before survived the opening match in her home tournament.
A Summer to Forget
Gauff, on the other hand, has to deal with yet another setback: After good results at the Australian Open and the French Open (both semifinals), she disappointed throughout the summer. She exited early in both Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the preparation tournament in Cincinnati. “This was certainly not the summer I had dreamt of.”
At least: she is currently in good company in New York. Two high-profile players, Carlos Alcaraz (also the titleholder) and Novak Djokovic, had to pack their bags early in the last major event of the season.
