The work of German artist Georg Baselitz, who has been expressing the world where old values have collapsed through upside-down pictures, has come to Korea.

The exhibition ‘Eagle’, which opened on the 3rd at Thaddeus Ropac Seoul in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, introduces oil paintings and drawings of eagles drawn upside down by the artist. The artist’s upside-down eagle paintings, which have received worldwide attention, are also famous for being hung in the office of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder. The eagle is a symbol of Germany and is also used in the national emblem, so it is fitting for a head of state to hang a painting of an eagle falling down in his office. It may be hard to imagine in Korea, but in Germany, it was interpreted as Chancellor Schröder’s boldness and love of modern art.

All of the works presented in this exhibition are new works recently painted by the 86-year-old artist. While the painting that hung in former Chancellor Schröder’s office exuded powerful images with thick brushstrokes despite the falling paint, these works are more lyrical, with flowing lines drawn on thinly applied, sensual colors.

Baselitz not only paints eagles but also portraits upside down. In particular, when you see a person upside down, you feel dizzy. It captures the atmosphere of Germany and Europe, which were in ruins both physically and mentally after World War II.

Along with Anselm Kiefer, Bachelitz is considered an artist of the Neo-Expressionist movement that arose in Germany in the 1980s. At a time when painting was being neglected by conceptual art or pop art, Neo-Expressionist artists insisted on ‘returning to the essence of painting’ and brought the art world’s attention back to painting with their rough and energetic sculptural qualities. In 2018, to commemorate his 80th birthday, a traveling retrospective was held at the Beyeler Foundation in Basel, Switzerland, the Hirshhorn Museum in the United States, and the Unterlinden Museum in France, and a large-scale retrospective will be held at the Centre Pompidou in France in 2021-2022, and his works have been actively studied and exhibited at art museums until recently. Until November 9.
