At least 129 inmates have died during a mass escape attempt from a prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), central Africa.

According to Reuters, AFP, and others on the 2nd (local time), Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani Ruku said in a statement posted on social media X that day, “A prison breakout has occurred at the Makala Prison in the capital Kinshasa,” and “There was also a fire at the prison administration building, food warehouse, and hospital.”

He added that “129 people died, including 24 who were shot after the warning,” and that “59 people were injured.”

Government spokesman Patrick Muyaya also confirmed to X that there had been an “attempted escape from the prison,” while explaining that security forces were now in control of the situation.

Earlier, an escape attempt was made at 2 a.m. (10 a.m. Korean time) at the Makala prison in Kinshasa, the capital of Democratic Republic of Congo. Inmates told Reuters that they heard gunfire and voices from outside.

“Some wards had doors that were open, some didn’t,” one inmate told Reuters. “The soldiers were shooting at anything that moved.”

“I woke up at night to gunshots,” Dadi Soso, who lives in the area, told AFP. “I heard gunshots from 1 or 2 in the morning until about 5 in the morning.”

Prison officials said no inmates have successfully escaped and those who have attempted to escape have died.

Makala Prison, which has a maximum capacity of 1,500 inmates, is said to hold between 14,000 and 15,000 inmates.

In 2020, in Democratic Republic of Congo, there was an incident in which more than 1,300 prisoners escaped from a prison that had been attacked by Islamic rebels.
