At least two people were killed and four were wounded today in a shooting at a high school in the US state of Georgia in the vicinity of Atlanta, Reuters reported, citing MSNBC television.

Live television footage showed several ambulances outside Appalachian High School in Winder, Georgia.

CNN said a reporter saw a patient being loaded onto a medical helicopter that had landed at the school.

“At approximately 10:23 a.m. (local time) officers from various police departments, as well as firefighters and paramedics, were dispatched to the high school in reference to reports of an active shooter,” the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “This is a developing situation,” it added.

A spokesperson for Barrow County Educational Institutions said the school was “secured by law enforcement and students are currently being evacuated from the building,” BTA reported.

A statement from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office said one suspect had been taken into custody.

Sergio Caldera, 17, said he was in chemistry class when he heard gunshots.

“My teacher went and opened the door to see what was going on. Another teacher came in and told her to close the door because there was a shooter,” Caldera told ABC News.

According to him, the teacher locked the door and the students fled to the back of the room. Caldera says they heard screams from outside while they were hiding in the room.
