I sincerely thank you, Mr. President, for the pleasant invitation to visit the country, and for your kind greetings. I wish to convey my most heartfelt wishes to the President-elect for fruitful work in the service of Indonesia, a vast archipelago of thousands and thousands of islands that are surrounded by the sea that connects Asia to the Ocean.
Arguably, just as the ocean is the natural element that binds all the Indonesian islands together, so is the mutual respect for the specific cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious characteristics of human groups. all in Indonesia the indispensable thread. that makes the people of Indonesia stay united and proud.
Your national mottoIt is the only difference” (“Unity in diversity“, which literally means”Just enough“) this multiform reality of people who are diverse, but firmly integrated into one nation. And it also shows that, just as the great biodiversity that is in this archipelago is a source of wealth and splendor, in the same way, the differences specific to form a wonderful mosaic, in which each piece is an irreplaceable element in the composition of the original work. And this is your greatest wealth.
Harmony in differences is achieved when each particular opinion takes into account the common needs and when all ethnic groups and religious confessions act in a spirit of brotherhood, pursuing the noble purpose of serving the good of all. Knowing that one is participating in a shared history in which everyone contributes, and in which everyone’s solidarity with the whole is fundamental, helps to identify appropriate solutions, to avoid the polarization of differences and to change confrontation as a whole. effective collaboration.

This wise and delicate balance between the many cultures, the different ideological visions and the reasons underlying the unity must be continuously protected against any imbalance. It is a job, I say again, a job that responds to everyone, but in a special way for the task that politics does, when harmony, equity, respect for basic human rights are proposed as goals, sustainable development, solidarity and achievement of peace, within society and in relations with other people and nations. And here lies the greatness of politics. A wise man already said, that politics is the highest form of charity. This is amazing.
In order to promote a peaceful and constructive harmony that guarantees peace and unites efforts to overcome the inequalities and pockets of misery that still exist in certain areas, the Church wishes to increase inter-religious dialogue. In this way, prejudices can be eliminated and a climate of respect and mutual trust will be fostered, essential factors to face common challenges, among them, opposition to extremism and intolerance, which – to distort the faith – try to to impose themselves through the use of deception and violence. On the other hand, closeness, listening to the opinions of others, creates the brotherhood of the nation. And that is a very, very beautiful thing.
The Catholic Church puts itself at the service of the common good and wishes to strengthen cooperation with public institutions and other organizations of civil society, but never by proselytizing; but respect everyone’s faith. And with this he encourages create a more equitable social framework and guarantee a more efficient and equitable distribution of social assistance.
Let me now make an allusion for the Preamble to the Constitution of 1945, which gives valuable indications of the direction of the path chosen by an independent democratic Indonesia. This is a very beautiful story; When one reads it, one realizes that everyone has chosen it.
In a few lines, the Preface refers twice to Almighty God and the need for His blessing to land on the new State of Indonesia. Similarly, the opening text of the Basic Law refers twice to social justice, promoting the establishment of an international order based on it, as one of the main objectives to be achieved for the benefit of all Indonesian people.
There is unity in plurality, social justice, divine blessing, therefore, the basic principles intended to inspire and guide specific programs are like the support structure, the strong foundation on which the house will be built. And how can we not notice that these principles correspond very well to the motto of my visit to Indonesia: “Faith, brotherhood and compassion“?
But, unfortunately, there are some trends in today’s world that hinder the development of universal brotherhood (cf. letter enc. All brothers, 9). In different regions we see violent conflicts emerging, which are often the result of mutual disrespect, the intolerant desire for one’s own interests, one’s own position or one’s own partial vision of history to prevail at all costs, even if it means endless suffering for entire communities and leading to real bloody wars.
Sometimes violent tension also arises within the states themselves, because those in power want to standardize everything, imposing their vision even on matters that should be left to the autonomy of each individual or group .
On the other hand, despite persuasive political statements, there are many cases where there is a lack of effective, broad-minded commitment to building social justice. As a result, much of humanity has been relegated to the margins, without the adequate means to achieve a dignified life, and without safeguards to address the serious social inequalities that are growing and causing conflicts serious. And how they solve this by legislation of death, that is, limiting birth rates, limiting the greatest wealth of a country, which is births. In your own country, on the other hand, families of three, four and even five children are flourishing. And this is noticeable in the middle age of the country. Keep it up. He is an example to all nations. This may seem strange, but some families prefer to have a cat or a small dog, and not a child. This is not correct.
In other contexts, in addition, people consider that they can or should do without seeking God’s blessing, considering that it is superfluous for the person and civil society, it is thought that these should be promoted with their forces himself, however, in doing so. Frustration and failure are often met with. And on the contrary, there are cases where faith in God is continuously put forward, but often, unfortunately, it is manipulated and does not serve to build peace, communion, dialogue, respect, cooperation and fraternity, for the country to build, but to foster divisions and hatred.
Brothers and sisters, in the light of these shadows, it is pleasant to observe how the philosophy that inspires the organization of the Indonesian State shows wisdom and balance. In this regard, I do my part the words spoken by Saint John Paul II during his visit to this same palace, in 1989. Among other things, he said: “In recognition of the presence of legitimate pluralism, with respect to the Human and political Rights of all citizens, and to support the growth of national unity based on tolerance and respect for the” In addition, you lay the foundations for the just and peaceful society that Indonesians want for themselves and want to pass on to their children” (Address to the President of the Republic of IndonesiaJakarta, October 9, 1989).
In the course of historical events, even if the inspiring principles, previously recalled, do not always have the force, in each case they remain valid and reliable, like a lighthouse that shows us the direction to take and warns us about avoiding the most dangerous mistakes.
Dear Presidents, gentlemen, I hope that everyone knows, in their daily work, how to be inspired by these principles and make them effective in the normal performance of their respective functions, because the work of justice and peacepeace is the result of justice. Harmony is achieved, in fact, when everyone commits, not only based on their own interests and their own vision, but for the benefit of everyone, building bridges, favoring agreements and creating synergies, uniting efforts and to overcome all kinds of moral, economic and social misery, and to promote peace and harmony.
My brothers and sisters, continue on this path, which is good and right, and which accordingly brings blessing to all people: may God bless Indonesia with peace, for a future full of hope. And God bless you all!
