Boseong County Governor Kim Cheol-woo visited the Boseong Livestock Cooperative Livestock Market to encourage the Chuseok holiday. Boseong County Governor Kim Cheol-woo announced that he visited the Boseong Livestock Cooperative Livestock Market on the 3rd ahead of the Chuseok holiday to encourage the livestock industry workers, including livestock cooperative officials and merchants.

On this day, Governor Kim checked the price trends and trading status of Korean beef and discussed the difficulties faced by livestock farmers and current issues related to the development of the livestock industry.

This market opened earlier than usual to allow merchants to secure a supply of Hanwoo cattle for slaughter, and was more lively than usual, with around 250 heads of cattle being traded and around 240 of them being traded.

The average price of traded Korean beef is 4.62 million won for fattening cattle (600 kg), 3.35 million won for male calves (6 months or older), and 2.18 million won for female calves (6 months or older).

This shows that the average price of large cattle has fallen by about 28% (KRW 1.74 million) and calves by about 36% (KRW 1.44 million) compared to the boom period in 2021, deepening the concerns of farmers.

In order to reduce farm management costs due to the decline in cattle prices, Boseong County is making all-out efforts to stabilize management and increase income for Hanwoo farms by providing the following support this year: △ KRW 6.1 billion (loan) to 96 farms for feed purchase funds, △ KRW 36 million to 61 farms for the difference in interest on feed purchase funds (1%), and △ KRW 303 million to 9,184 head (628 farms) for the difference in feed costs for small-scale Hanwoo farms (50 head or less).

Governor Kim Cheol-woo said, “Hanwoo has experienced a crisis of cattle price fluctuations every 10 years.” He added, “It will take some time until cattle prices recover due to the increase in the number of raised cattle and the slowdown in consumption caused by the economic downturn. However, let’s work together to overcome the crisis by lowering production costs and producing high-quality Hanwoo through breeding superior cows to improve Hanwoo and cultivating feed crops using idle farmland.”
