“The real dictator is the president.”

On the 4th, Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae took aim at President Yoon Seok-yeol in his speech as the leader of the National Assembly negotiation group. In his speech lasting about 40 minutes, he used the word “dictatorship” five times and openly criticized President Yoon, the government, and the ruling party. The People Power Party responded by saying, “This is no different from a declaration to kick away cooperation.” The presidential office also said, “It seems that the Democratic Party has not been able to escape from the groundless rumors and sophistry.” There are observations that this could lead to another head-on clash between the ruling and opposition parties, just three days after the ruling and opposition party leaders’ meeting.

● “Yoon, you look like a naked emperor”

Floor leader Park devoted most of his speech, which was over 10,000 characters long, to criticizing President Yoon.

He said, “The ruling party claims that the opposition party is exercising parliamentary dictatorship, but the real dictatorship is the president. President Yoon has no will to protect the Constitution,” and fiercely attacked the president for exercising his veto and not attending the opening ceremony. Referring to the state briefing that President Yoon gave at the end of last month, he said, “If the ‘new emperor’ from the fairy tale existed in reality, it would be just like that,” and “If he continues to go against public sentiment, President Yoon will eventually follow in the same unfortunate footsteps.” There was an interpretation that this suggested the possibility of President Yoon’s impeachment.

He continued his criticism of being pro-Japanese. Park said, “The government is steadily pushing forward with an alliance with Japan. Japan, which has gained strength from the government’s unilateral pro-Japanese policy, is more blatantly asserting sovereignty over Dokdo and distorting history,” and “There is growing concern that if this continues, we will hand over Dokdo to Japan and have the Self-Defense Forces enter the Korean Peninsula.” He also called for the dismissal of Minister of Employment and Labor Kim Moon-soo and Director of the Independence Hall of Korea Kim Hyung-seok, who have been embroiled in controversy over their “New Right” view of history.

The prosecution, which is investigating Representative Lee Jae-myung and others, also took a direct hit. Floor leader Park said, “The prosecution has become the Red Guards protecting power and is leading the way in suppressing the opposition party,” and “They have searched and seized hundreds of cases against the leader of the main opposition party and indicted him in every case, but they have abused their immunity against those in power.”

● Office of the President: “Unconstitutional bill proposed and then a tall tale and sophistry”

The ruling party immediately protested. An official from the Blue House met with reporters and said, “They proposed an unconstitutional and illegal bill to induce a request for reconsideration, and they called the prosecutors investigating the party to the National Assembly for a hearing in order to bulletproof the party leader. They are even saying that they will impeach the prosecutors and judges investigating the party leader.” He pointed out, “It is hard to understand that the floor leader of such a party would bring up the law.” In response, Kang Yoo-jung, the floor spokesperson for the Democratic Party, rebutted, “The Blue House dismisses the public’s anger and the opposition party’s warnings as sophistry,” and “The Blue House’s double standard of turning a blind eye to reality and deaf to public opinion is truly pathetic.”

The People Power Party raised its voice and protested while Park was giving her speech. Every time Park spewed harsh words toward President Yoon, such as “divisive thinking, inconsistency, and irresponsibility,” the People Power Party members countered by saying, “Stop talking about the Democratic Party.” During the speech, the People Power Party members left, saying, “We can’t listen anymore,” and by the time the speech ended, only 62 of the 108 People Power Party members remained.

After the negotiation group representative’s speech, Representative Han Dong-hoon commented, “First of all, I regret that if there had been a little more emphasis on cooperation, the discussions at the ruling and opposition party leaders’ meeting could have been further developed.”

Senior Spokesperson Kwak Gyu-taek said, “The negotiation group representative’s speech that day was a ‘rising and falling’ speech by the president, and a ‘blaming others’ speech filled with criticism of the government and the ruling party.” He added, “It is deeply regrettable that the minimum check on the abuse of legislative power (the presidential veto) was treated as a violation of the Constitution.” Floor Spokesperson Park Jun-tae said, “The part where the president’s personnel authority was formalized by framing it as pro-Japanese was also an inappropriate remark to make in the National Assembly.”
