New Delhi: Today is the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, which is celebrated as National Sports Day in the country. Major Dhyan Chand has the highest status in the sports history of India. Had he been alive, he would have been celebrating his 119th birthday today. He was born on 29 August 1905 in Allahabad (present-day Prayagraj) to Sameshwar Dutt Singh and Shraddha Singh. Known as the ‘Hockey Magician’, Dhyan Chand played an important role in winning three Olympic gold medals for India in 1928, 1932 and 1936. He is fondly called ‘Dadda’.
Army and wrestling
You will be surprised to know that Major Dhyan Chand’s first love was not hockey but wrestling. His real name was Dhyan Singh. He used to wrestle in his childhood. He joined the Indian Army at the age of just 16. While in the army, he learned to play hockey from Tiwari, who was a Major in the Brahmin Regiment. He played his first match for India in New Zealand on 13 May 1926. In the year 1948, the Major announced his retirement from hockey. In the year 2021, the Government of India changed the name of India’s highest sports honor from Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
The son unveiled the statue
On the auspicious occasion of National Sports Day, Major Dhyan Chand’s Olympian son Ashok Kumar unveiled his father’s statue in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Many dignitaries were present during this time. Speaking at the event, Ashok Kumar became emotional. He said, Major Dhyan Chand set new standards as a player, soldier, citizen and father… This is a proud moment for me.
