‘Yoon, not attending the opening ceremony’ virtually revealed as a suggestion
Chairing a meeting of all employees, “Responsible for overcoming the crisis”
On the 4th, Chief of Staff to the President Chung Jin-seok said at a meeting of all employees of the Office of the President, “How can I tell you to go to the National Assembly where mockery, jeers, and verbal abuse are rampant against the president and come back from the humiliation?” In effect, he suggested to President Yoon Seok-yeol that he not attend the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Assembly. This is the first time since taking office in April of this year that Chief of Staff Chung has presided over a meeting of all employees.
According to the Office of the President, Chief of Staff Chung said in the auditorium of the Blue House in Yongsan that day, “The National Assembly Speaker and the opposition party leadership are neglecting this situation and are not taking any prior measures, and are telling the president to come to the National Assembly and face some humiliation.” “Until the National Assembly regains its senses and returns to normal, I have no confidence in telling the president to go to the National Assembly.” Chief of Staff Chung continued, “In this extreme situation of a minority government and a majority opposition party, difficulties continue, but it is the fate and duty of the Blue House staff to overcome these difficulties.” “Although we are experiencing an unprecedented political situation in constitutional history, such as impeachment, special prosecution, and excessive hearings, we all have a responsibility to come together as one mind and one purpose to overcome this difficulty.” He also emphasized, “All reforms are accompanied by resistance,” and “Staff need to become frontline PR warriors with ‘One Voice’ and make efforts and determination to persuade the public of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration’s policies.”
This is the second inquiry since the Yoon Seok-yeol administration took office, presided over by former Chief of Staff Kim Dae-ki on September 13, 2022.
There is analysis that this is a sort of ‘military discipline’ move amidst the president’s declining approval rating, the opposition party’s repeated attacks, and the conflict between the ruling and opposition parties over increasing the number of medical school students. At the hearing that day, Director Chung, Policy Director Sung Tae-yoon, and National Security Director Shin Won-sik spoke, and around 500 staff members of the presidential office attended.
