Brian May, guitarist for the British rock band Queen, revealed on the 4th (local time) that he had suffered a ‘mini-stroke’ last week and was unable to use his left arm for a while.

May, 77, said in a video posted to her website that she was “feeling fine now” but had been placed under “home quarantine” and advised not to drive, fly or do anything that raises her heart rate too much.

“I want to start with some good news,” May said in the video. “The good news is that I can play guitar after the events of the last few days.” “The reason I’m saying that is because I had this little health issue that I mentioned, and I was wondering if I would be able to play guitar,” she said. “The little health issue that I mentioned happened about a week ago, the doctors called it a mini-stroke, and all of a sudden, really out of the blue, I couldn’t control this arm (my left arm) at all.”

May said she was “a little scared” by what had suddenly happened, but credited the medical staff at the London hospital who treated her with her recovery.

“I really don’t want sympathy,” May said of the reason she didn’t tell him right away. “Please don’t do that. It’ll clutter up my inbox and I really hate that.”

May, who is also an astrophysicist, revealed that she almost died from a heart attack in 2020.

May, who created Queen’s signature hits such as “We Will Rock You” and “Who Wants to Live Forever,” continued to perform under the Queen name along with drummer Roger Taylor even after the death of Freddie Mercury (1991) and the departure of bassist John Deacon (1997).

Meanwhile, stroke is a disease in which the brain is damaged when the blood vessel supplying blood to the brain is blocked or bursts. When a cerebral blood vessel is blocked and part of the brain is damaged, it is classified as cerebral infarction, and when a cerebral blood vessel ruptures and blood collects in the brain, causing brain damage, it is classified as cerebral hemorrhage. Cerebral infarction is more common at a ratio of 8 to 2.

Stroke occurs in more than 100,000 patients annually in Korea alone.

Experts recommend managing chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking to prevent stroke.
