Yoon visits Korea amid opposition from U.S. nuclear power companies
Yoon: “Actively cooperating for successful completion of nuclear power plant”

National Security Advisor Tomáš Pojar, who visited Korea as a special envoy for the Czech Prime Minister, met with President Yoon Seok-yeol on the 4th and said, “The Czech Republic is confident that it will be able to sign a final contract with Korea for the construction of the Dukovany nuclear power plant.” Some analysts say that this statement by a high-ranking Czech official is significant, as it came amid opposition from Westinghouse, a U.S. nuclear power company, over the selection of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) as the preferred bidder for the nuclear power plant project.

The presidential office reported that President Yoon met with Aide Poyar at the presidential office in Yongsan that day and exchanged opinions on ways to strengthen Korea-Czech relations. During the meeting, Aide Poyar said, “I came to Korea to make practical preparations for President Yoon’s visit to the Czech Republic in September,” and “The Czech government hopes to strengthen comprehensive cooperation with Korea not only in the nuclear power sector but also in industry, investment, defense, transportation, and research and development (R&D).” He added, “We will do our best to prepare so that President Yoon’s visit to the Czech Republic at the invitation of Prime Minister Petr Piala can become an opportunity to significantly strengthen bilateral relations.”

President Yoon also said, “We will actively cooperate for the successful completion of the Czech nuclear power plant project,” and “I hope that through my visit to the Czech Republic scheduled for this month, we can further strengthen the Korea-Czech Republic strategic partnership established in 2015 and achieve concrete results in expanding mutually beneficial cooperation.”

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy is taking the position that it will resolve the intellectual property dispute with Westinghouse before KHNP signs a final contract with Czech Electricity, the new Czech nuclear power plant orderer, in March next year. According to the data requested and received by Rep. Shin Young-dae of the Democratic Party of Korea from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on that day, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy stated, “We currently have different positions with Westinghouse on intellectual property rights,” but “There is room for cooperation in areas such as equipment supply, as in the case of Barakah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).”
