Excellent students with the maximum score enrolled in the new bachelor’s program “Food and Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies”
The admission of new students for the academic year 2024/2025, which will be opened on September 15 in the courtyard of the University of Food Technologies in Plovdiv, was successfully completed.
The huge interest increased by 10% those wishing to study at UHT. Among them are many graduates from elite schools in the country, who until last year were looking for a place to continue their education abroad. The greatest interest of applicants this year is in the new bachelor’s program “Food and Pharmaceutical Biotechnologies”, where students with a maximum score of 24 were enrolled.
“I am sure that they are attracted to it by the prospect of developing in the field of modern technologies and their application in the food industry and in pharmacy”, says the vice-rector for academic activities and academic staff Prof. Georgi Kostov. And since food science has always been and will be an actual topic in society, because it is directly related to the quality of life and health, a very desirable specialty remains “Food Technology and Quality”. Traditionally attractive for young people are the specializations “Hospitality and Restaurant Management”, “Tourism”, “Computer Systems and Technologies”, “Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology”, which is protected and those accepted will not pay a tuition fee.
The influx of applicants is solid. “All specialties at UHT are developed together with representatives of business and the Board of Trustees of the higher school. The goal is for the personnel we prepare to cope with modern challenges as well as possible, and this requires the pooling of resources and the application of multidisciplinary approaches”, states the rector, Prof. Galin Ivanov.
The university has a unique learning profile. All specialties from the entire spectrum of the food industry are represented here. Some of them will be updated, as well as their names. In addition to personnel for food technology and tourism, specialists in economics, engineering and information technology are trained here. More than 3,000 students are trained according to the most modern European standards. Of them, over 80% have excellent professional achievements in our country and abroad. In the focus of attention of the management of UHT are always the questions related to living conditions for studying and living of the students. For the new academic year, the completely renovated student dormitory “Maritsa 3” will open its doors, where there are 140 double rooms with private bathrooms for 278 students. These include two for the disabled and one for isolation during a pandemic. On each of the five floors there are 4 rooms for families, a kitchen and a laundry room equipped with built-in appliances. On the first floor there is a reading room, as well as staff quarters. Plumbing, heating and electrical installations have been replaced, external insulation has been done, the windows have been replaced. The rooms are comfortably furnished with modern furniture and are equipped with internet and television. An external elevator, an evacuation ladder and a platform for the disabled were built. The internal elevators have been renovated. The investment is worth nearly BGN 5.2 million. Another almost BGN 10 million has been allocated by the Ministry of Education and Science under the Program for renovation, repair and furnishing of student dormitories, provided for the management of state higher education institutions 2024-2027 for student dormitory “Maritsa 4”.
A public tender for the selection of a contractor for the repair works related to the renovation of the base and the improvement of the building’s energy efficiency is about to be announced. This fall, on October 16, the employers’ exhibition “Career Days – Career Navigator” will be held for the first time. The date was not chosen by chance, then it is the world food day, says Prof. Kostov and adds that the partner of the event is the Food Industry Union.
UHT makes its branch in Zlatograd
The project creates new opportunities for outsourced training and cross-border cooperation
The University of Food Technology in Plovdiv and the municipality of Zlatograd signed a memorandum of cooperation. The subject of the agreement is the opening of a branch of UHT in Zlatograd, offering training to students in specialties taught by the university.
The municipality is committed to finding and providing for free use by the affiliate a building for training and a dormitory. At the official ceremony, the rector of UHT Prof. Galin Ivanov and the mayor Miroslav Yanchev signed the agreement. This took place in the assembly hall of the municipality in the presence of the deputy governor of the Smolyan region Adrian Petrov, the deputy rector Assoc. Kiril Mihalev and Todor Batkov-son, the initiator and main driver of the project. After the signing ceremony, the UHT delegation visited the iconic Old School building with the bell tower, which could be the home of the future branch.
The building, bearing the marks of architecture from the 1930s, has the status of a cultural value with the category of “local importance”. “As an established leader in training in the field of food and tourism, it is extremely important for UHT to contribute to the sustainable development of regions such as Zlatograd, offering attractive opportunities for the future professional realization of young people,” says Prof. Galin Ivanov. Mayor Miroslav Yanchev supported the rector and reminded that Zlatograd has a unique potential for a university with the profile of UHT due to its dynamic development as one of the centers of cultural tourism in the country. This is helped by the food and wine industry in the region, the proximity and connectivity with neighboring Greece.
“Within the cross-border cooperation programs, work will also be done on the construction of the Center for Balkan Food and Culinary Technologies at the branch,” added Todor Batkov-sin.
Zlatograd is the southernmost city in Bulgaria, located near the border with Greece. The city has a number of cultural and natural attractions, thanks to which it is one of the most preferred destinations for tourism in Bulgaria.
