Rich Homie Quan, the rapper who became widely known for hits like “Type of Way” and “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” has died at the age of 34.
The rapper was found unresponsive by his partner on the couch in their Atlanta home. He was not breathing and had no pulse, prompting her to call 911. According to TMZ, he began foaming at the mouth when she attempted to move him.
Rich Homie Quan’s death was confirmed by a spokesperson for the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office, as well as by his family, who expressed their devastation to TMZ. The cause of death was not immediately announced, and an autopsy is expected to be conducted on Friday (6/9).
Rich Homie Quan, whose real name is Dekantes Devonte Lamar, grew up in DeKalb County on the east side of Atlanta and entered the city’s evolving rap scene in 2011 after a series of run-ins that resulted in a stint in Georgia’s prison system.
He became one of the biggest names in the hip-hop scene in the mid-2010s, releasing several mixtapes before gaining wider recognition in 2013 with the hit “Type of Way,” which led to deeper connections with Atlanta’s music circles, including names like Gucci Mane and Birdman, and eventually with rapper Young Thug.
This was followed by “Flex (Ooh, Ooh, Ooh),” a song produced by DJ Spinz and Nitti Beatz. It became his highest-charting solo single, peaking at No. 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Rich Homie Quan later collaborated with Young Thug on the Cash Money Records project “Rich Gang” and frequently worked with 2 Chainz and Jacquees.
Later, in 2014, they achieved success with the song “Lifestyle,” propelling both of them to the top of the charts and significant success.
Quan’s only full studio album, “Rich as in Spirit,” was released in 2018 by Motown Records and included a feature from Rick Ross.
