Ugandan long-distance runner Rebecca Cheptegei (33), who competed in the women’s marathon at the 2024 Paris Olympics, died after receiving treatment for burns all over her body caused by arson by her boyfriend.
On the 5th (local time), Donald Lucare, the president of the Ugandan Olympic Committee, told X, “I have heard the sad news that Cheptegei has passed away after being viciously attacked by her boyfriend.” “We have lost a great athlete due to a cowardly and reckless act.” The hospital also reported, “Cheptegei passed away early this morning due to multiple organ failure caused by burns.”
According to foreign media reports such as the BBC and CNN, Cheptegei was returning home from church with her two daughters on the 1st when she was attacked by her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, who broke into her home.
At the time, Ndiema doused Cheptegei’s body with gasoline and set it on fire, just three weeks after Cheptegei finished 44th in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics.
As a result, Cheptegei suffered severe burns over 80% of his body and was treated in the intensive care unit. Ndiema was also admitted to the same hospital and is currently receiving treatment for his burns.
After Cheptegei bought land in Kenya’s Trans Njoia County where the training centre is located and built a house, he and Ndiema moved in together, but the two were said to have been at odds over land issues in recent times.
There was also testimony from a resident that he heard arguing sounds coming from the house on the day of the incident.
“We wonder why he tried to take away our daughter’s belongings,” the family said.
Police plan to continue their investigation as soon as Ndiema recovers.
