Kids are money, that’s no secret.

In fact, two years ago we reported that Raising a child in Spain costs €300,000 until they become independent (which in Spain is rarely once they turn 18).

And perhaps the time when parents are most reminded of how much their children are worth is when they want to go back to school after summer vacation.

According to a study by Statista, this year it will cost on average €490 to prepare a child for the new school year, €43 more than a year ago, making it the most expensive. back to school (back to school) yet.

And that’s for textbooks, clothes and other school supplies, not school fees and extracurricular activities.

Parents in Granada told the local daily Granada Digital that “it’s a pity that coloring books for three and four-year-olds are €300”, which describes how the high price of ‘official’ books is a specific complaint for parents.

Understandably, parents’ Whatsapp groups have been full of money-saving solutions and mentions of government subsidies in recent weeks.

It makes perfect sense, especially as even more costs have to be added to the budget: the registration fee (register), school fees, school lunches, sports uniforms etc. – it just keeps adding up.

According to the Spanish consumer group OCU, the more ‘famous’ the school is, the higher the price at the end of the year: for public schools it is €1,200, for government-aided schools (joint) it is €3,396 and for private schools it is €7,961.

The cost of having a child may not be the only reason why many Spaniards choose not to become parents, but it certainly plays an important and negligible role in a country where wages are generally low, and costs living goes on.

In other news making purses in Spain, there is olive oil, a staple of Spanish cuisine.

There it is virgin oil, extra virgin oil or just olive oilall different quality and price tags.

Until recently, regardless of a person’s income, every family in Spain would have one of the above in their kitchen.

But as a sign of changing times, sunflower oil (Sunflower oil) has recently surpassed olive oil in terms of sales for the first time in Spanish history. In the first quarter of 2024, 107 million liters of olive oil were sold, compared to 179 million liters of sunflower oil.

Through a combination of reduced production and predatory selling prices, the Spanish were forced to switch to more vulnerable but cheaper sunflower oil. In addition it has also beat their meals in other ways: they eat fresh fruit, fish and meat.

The Spanish government has tried cut VAT on olive oil but this did not have enough of an impact on money, with a liter of extra virginity spent around € 10 on average last August, when sunflower oil can easily be under €2.

Now more than ever, olive oil is truly Spain’s liquid gold. Bottles stacked on supermarket shelves are security alarms, criminals try to pass low-quality fuel as ‘good things’, and Spanish newspapers are full of predictable stories that may drop in prices.

If there is a silver lining, it is that economists predict that the good harvest expected this autumn in Spain will bring big price reductions for the masses.
