As Rēzekne County Council Chairman Monvīds Shvarts (JV, “Par”, Latgale party) told LETA agency, the drone fell “in the clearing” and did not hit populated areas.
The downing of the drone is not within the competence of the municipal civil defense commission and all processes are monitored by the state defense department, emphasized Schwartz, adding that the municipal services were therefore not involved.
It has already been reported that a Russian military unmanned aerial vehicle flew into Latvia from Belarus on Saturday and then crashed in Rēzekne district, LETA agency was informed by the Ministry of Defense (MoD).
According to the message of the Latvian Defense Ministry, preliminary information indicates that the object in Latvia had no “hostile goals”, while the Belarusian activist monitoring organization “Belaruski Hajun” did not rule out that a “Shahed” type drone fell in the east of Latvia, which flew over the territory of Belarus on Saturday morning.
Today at 14:00 the Ministry of Defense will hold a press briefing of representatives of the defense industry, where information will be provided about the drone that fell in the Rēzekne region, the Ministry’s Press Department informed LETA agency. Defense Minister Andris Spruds (P), National Armed Forces Commander Lieutenant General Leonids Kalniņš and Air Force Commander Colonel Viesturs Masulis will take part in the press briefing.
