The working poverty decreased by 5.7 percentage points in the six-year term of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) by going from 40.7 percent in the fourth quarter of 2018 to 35 percent in the second quarter of 2024.
For this second trimester of the year, working poverty in urban areas was 30.9%, a level three points lower than the 33.9% recorded in 2023.
In rural areas, however, the rate dropped to 47.6% from 50.2%, making working poverty in rural areas the lowest since records began in the first quarter of 2005.
This annual reduction in working poverty in the second quarter of 2024 occurred in the face of a increase in employment and an increase in per capita labor income (8.9 percent) from 3,076.13 pesos to 3 thousand 350.84 pesos between the second quarter of 2023 and the second quarter of 2024.
The reduction of working poverty would be an indicator that more Mexicans were able to acquire the basic basket in more than 17 years.
