Bizarre and aggressive: Martin Schirec plays in Mexico again

by times news cr

The band Pungent Stench It is recognized as one of the most bizarre in terms of its lyrics within old school death metal and although its career continued until 2007, Mexico was only its destination in the already distant 2005, but now its leaderMartin Schirenc, He says he is ready to return to the country on the stage of Candlestick Metal Festin León with his band Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench.

“Of course I’m excited, I think the festival has a great lineup but regardless of that I’m excited to return to Mexico to play, I know that things are not the same anymore, these are different times, but I am sure that Mexicans continue to have fun differently than we Europeans do,” said the musician.

He also recalled the tour of Mexico, which he remembers as one of the most “surprising and dangerous” due to the behavior of the people: “In the Mexico City, While we were playing, a guy came out from among the crowd with toilet seats, throwing them at everyone. I was definitely living in the moment and complementing the aggressiveness of the music, but it was also dangerous, that fell close to where I was,” he said with a laugh.

THE MOST BIZARRE BAND

Characterized by talking about themes such as fetishism, perversions and death mainly, the band quickly gained notoriety in the underground scene and subsequently made its way to measured fame within the genre: “There were already many very worn-out themes among the bands of that generation and we didn’t want to be just another one and we simply thought about what could be more shocking. “We never wanted to shock the parents in the audience,” he recalled sarcastically.

But despite the relative success, the Austrian musician eventually wanted to move away from the project, although he continued to devote himself to music: “I think I got bored very quickly. Sometimes I see my friends from bands like Incantation or Cannibal Corpse who have the energy and the desire to never stop, that was not my case, I think I was looking for another path and yes, we still compose, we have written and rehearsed things but I simply have not found the right moment to want to release something,” he said.

He also considers that his place with Pungent Stench is the memory: “People want to hear the music from the first three albums and that’s fine, I don’t intend to play anything other than what people want to hear.

“Smooth Kingdom was an album that was recorded in 2007 and was partially finished, all we did was release it a decade after it was planned. I figured if it existed there was no reason to keep it and that was it, but our set is not based on that.”

Although the musician is currently involved in festivals and a world scene that constantly debuts bands, he said that he does not usually listen to projects new.

“I’m a bit upset with today’s metal, it’s become very absurd, nerd. I consider myself a bit more of an old-school punk and I relate to that in every way, to the idea of the “you didn’t care” attitude, which doesn’t exist anymore.

“Metal has always been a bit cringeworthy in the sense of its lyrics or the whole making horns thing, but nowadays the cringeworthy nature of many bands, their attitudes and their way of being is no longer even funny. The most commercial ones all sound exactly the same, even though they are different genres, their recordings sound produced the same, clean, technical. The true essence of what metal is for me has been lost.“, he declared.

On the other hand, Spanish is a language that Martin is related to and has integrated into his artistic career in titles such as Viva la Muerte, Rape: Pagar con la misma monedas, among other terms well known to fans.

“When I was a child, I had a friend whose family came from Spain. I would often stay at his house and listen to his mother speaking to them in that language. I always liked the way it sounded, but I particularly like the accent.” Mexican, I feel like it’s the best one I’ve ever heard.

It’s probably that and the fact that when we toured here in 2005, we had a few days off to visit places like Yucatan “They have beautiful landscapes, which is what makes me like Mexico so much. I am going to enjoy it a lot,” he concluded.

Schirenc Plays Pungent Stench will be performed on Sunday, September 8th on the stage of the Candlestick Metal Fest
