jpnn.com – The General Chairperson of the Senior High School Forestry Alumni Association (IKA SKMA) Irwan Fecho appreciated the issuance of the Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry (Permen LHK) Number 10 of 2024 concerning Legal Protection for People Fighting for the Right to a Good and Healthy Environment.
It is known that the LHK Regulation also provides protection for environmental activists or activists who cannot be prosecuted criminally or civilly.
This is as stated in Article 2 of the Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation 10/2024 which reads;
(1) People who fight for the environment cannot be prosecuted criminally or sued civilly.
(2) People who fight for the environment as referred to in paragraph (1) consist of:
a. individual;
b. group of people;
c. Environmental Organizations;
is. academics/experts;
e. customary law communities; and
f. business entity.
“The new regulation that protects environmental activists from legal retaliation is a progressive step in environmental governance. This regulation should have been introduced long ago after Law No. 32 of 2009 concerning Environmental Protection and Management was issued,” said Irwan in Jakarta, Tuesday (10/9/2024).
Even though the regulation is very late, Irwan, who is also a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives for the East Kalimantan electoral district, still appreciates the steps taken by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry.
“This regulation certainly underlines the government’s recognition of the important role these activists play in preserving ecosystems and combating environmental degradation,” he said.
IKA SKMA General Chair Irwan Fecho appreciated the issuance of LHK Regulation 10/2024 which protects environmental activists from criminal and civil lawsuits.
