A few weeks after leading Serbia’s national team to bronze at the Olympics, head coach Svetislav Pesic has confirmed his decision to step down.
“The president of the Serbian Basketball Union has resigned. From what I understand, he has done so to allow the new management to form a new coaching team and set new goals for the next Olympic cycle,” Pesic told Sportklub TV, referring to the upcoming changes in the management of the local basketball federation.
“I already communicated before the games in Paris that someone else should continue the work that I started,” said the 75-year-old specialist.
“After seeing that some have not understood correctly, I am now making it clear that those at the head of the federation must look for a new coach. Of course, I will always continue to be available to Serbian basketball, but now I will concentrate on other goals and projects,” Svetislav Pešić added.
In addition to the bronze medal from the Olympics in France, Pešić also has a silver medal from the world championship as coach of Serbia.
The next international cycle leading up to the Los Angeles Games in 2028 begins with EuroBasket 2025. The Serbians already have two wins in their Euro qualifying Group G, and they face Denmark in November and Finland and Georgia in February.
