New Delhi: BCCI i.e. Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the team of Team India for the first match of the 2-match home Test series against Bangladesh. Wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant made a comeback in this squad and Yash Dayal got a chance for the first time. However, the names of Shreyas Iyer and Mohammed Shami were not included in it. Now the question arises that why were these two players not included? Why were Shreyas Iyer and Mohammed Shami not selected?
According to the Times of India report, Shreyas Iyer’s poor performance in red-ball cricket and not performing well in the 2024 season has led the selectors to not call him back to the Test team. Fitness has also been a problem for Shreyas Iyer recently. He was dropped from the BCCI’s central contract for not being available for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy. This also angered the board officials and the selection committee. Although he may make a comeback, it seems that the selectors want more from the middle-order batsman before returning to the Test team.
BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar had earlier said that the veteran fast bowler could return for the Bangladesh series. However, Shami may not have ticked all the boxes for selection. In fact, he is unlikely to be selected even for the second Test against Bangladesh. Let us tell you that Mohammed Shami has been injured after the 2023 ODI World Cup. He also underwent surgery. Since then he has not been able to get fully fit yet. The fast bowler is likely to be selected in the Bengal team for the Ranji Trophy starting on October 11. If he manages to prove his fitness in the domestic tournament, then his return to Team India will be only a formality.
