Apple Unveils AirPods 4: Two Models with Enhanced Features and Active Noise Cancellation

by time news

Apple has introduced the new AirPods 4. As predicted by rumors, the TWS headphones will be available in two variants. The key difference: only one of the new models features active noise cancellation (ANC). This also brings additional benefits such as a transparency mode, a conversation mode, and adaptive audio. However, if sound quality during audio playback is your main concern, there should be no difference between the two new models.

The two new Apple AirPods 4 not only replace the 3rd generation AirPods but also their predecessor, which was still available as a more affordable entry-level model. The design of the new mid-range TWS headphones is more oriented towards the AirPods Pro 2 but still forgoes separate silicone tips. Apple claims to have significantly improved comfort by analyzing thousands of individual ear shapes. The technical basis now also features the H2 chip. This enables the use of Apple’s Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, among other things.

One important difference we should not overlook: only the Apple AirPods 4 with ANC can be wirelessly charged via Qi. Both models can otherwise be charged via USB-C through their case. The battery life of the variants does differ slightly due to the ANC implementation. Without ANC, the battery life is identical, maxing out at five hours of music playback. With active noise cancellation enabled, it lasts a maximum of four hours. Compared to premium in-ear headphones like the Sony WF-1000XM5, which offer eight hours of playback with ANC on, this is relatively low. But even in the price range of the AirPods 4, Apple falls behind the competition: the 50 euro cheaper Nothing Ear provides about 5.5 hours of playback with ANC and 9.5 hours without ANC.

If you also account for the case, you can get up to 30 hours (without ANC) from the AirPods 4 before needing to find a power outlet. With active noise cancellation enabled, it maxes out at 20 hours. It is also worth mentioning that the Apple AirPods 4 can of course be located using the “Find My” network, should you misplace or lose them.

The brand new Apple AirPods 4 are protected against dust and water according to the IP54 standard in both versions. Each earbud weighs about 4.3 grams. Connections to playback devices, such as your iPhone, can be established via Bluetooth 5.3. Furthermore, Apple has now integrated a speaker into the charging case. It can play sounds on demand if you cannot locate it at all. The AirPods 4 support audio playback of up to 16-bit and 48 kHz. They are said to provide low latency for gaming.
