The Moral Guidance Department of the General Staff reported that the 13th meeting of the naval commanders of the “5+5 Defense” initiative countries will be held on Tuesday, with the participation of all member states, with the exception of Mauritania, which participated remotely.
The meeting, which was held under the auspices of the Libyan Naval Chief of Staff, witnessed discussions on the current security challenges facing the countries of the Western Mediterranean, and ways to confront them.
The naval leaders of the participating countries stressed the importance of regional cooperation to confront common challenges, affirming their commitment to maintaining maritime security in the region.
For his part, the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Navy, Noureddine Al-Buni, praised the success of the meeting, appreciating the participation of all delegations.
In his speech, the Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, Mohamed Al-Haddad, stressed the importance of dialogue, solidarity and cooperation to achieve maritime security in the “5+5 Defense” zone.
At the end of the meeting, the participants stressed in a joint statement the need to unify efforts to enhance multilateral cooperation activities to address security challenges.
The 5+5 Group was established in 1990 in Rome and includes the Western Mediterranean countries (Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Malta, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal), and is concerned with issues of economic partnership, development, and security in the region.
