Goyang Special City (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) is accelerating its steps to become a world-class carbon reduction city.
The city is attempting various policies to promote bicycle use and create a pleasant urban environment, such as sharing transportation demand through bicycles and promoting bicycle sports and leisure.
Among them, the city is currently pursuing a bicycle infrastructure improvement project and is making efforts to leap forward as a carbon-neutral city by installing a public-led bicycle cultural complex as a pilot project.
The city is promoting the creation of a bicycle culture complex that can be used as a bicycle repair, sales, and rest area by utilizing idle space under the elevated highway. The bicycle culture complex will secure benches for resting, repair and maintenance space for bicycles, and create sales facilities, cafes, restrooms, green spaces, passageways, and open spaces.
We plan to provide customized spaces that meet the needs of citizens through modular design to allow for various convenience facility configurations. We also plan to establish an efficient operation system by integrating mobile bicycle repair centers and bicycle recycling workshops.
The project site is located under the 2nd Jayuro overpass near Haengjusanseong Fortress (Haengju Naedong 180-2 area) and has an area of 3,331㎡. In the future, additional installations are planned in areas adjacent to bicycle paths within the jurisdiction. The project site will utilize spaces with low utilization among areas where bicycle paths are installed within the jurisdiction.
Now, we have flexibly done the basic design so that we can standardize and modularize the design together with the general planner and the public planner in the architectural field. After passing the review by the Public Design Promotion Committee last August, we are currently in the detailed design stage and the construction is scheduled to be completed in June of next year.
If a bicycle culture complex is built, it is expected to contribute to the development of the bicycle industry, the spread of bicycle culture, the revitalization of the local economy, and the creation of a pleasant environment for future generations. It is also expected to help create a pleasant urban environment by sharing transportation demand through bicycles, promoting bicycle sports leisure, and realizing a world-class carbon reduction city.
City officials said, “We expect that this bicycle culture complex will encourage citizens to use bicycles more actively, creating a healthy urban environment. We will work with citizens to create a pleasant and sustainable city.”
