Russia, through Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, made a negative statement about both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris after the debate before the US presidential election. Peskov criticized that both candidates mentioned Russian President Vladimir Putin several times, and therefore called on them to “leave his name alone”.

“Our position is quite clear. The USA as a whole, regardless of which side the candidates are from, maintains a negative and hostile attitude towards our country. Putin’s name is used in the USA as one of the tools of internal political struggle. they really don’t like it and we hope they will leave our president’s name alone,” Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a statement.

Harris mentioned the name of the Russian president several times in the debate. “Putin would have you for lunch,” she told Trump. She also said that if Trump were president, “the Russian leader would be sitting in Kiev right now.”

In the discussion, the very aggressive Russian war in Ukraine came up. Trump declined to say directly whether it was in America’s interest for Ukraine to win the war, instead saying he could help the two nations come to an agreement. “I want the war to end. I want to save lives,” claimed the former American president.

“I’ll settle this before I’m president,” he added, repeating his earlier remark that he could end the war within 24 hours. “I think the reason why Donald Trump says this war would be over in 24 hours is because he would just give it up. And that’s not who we are as Americans,” Harris responded.

Paradoxically, given the Kremlin’s outraged reaction, Putin also commented on the US presidential candidates a week ago. At an economic forum in Vladivostok, he amusedly declared that he was supporting Harris in the election. “She has such an expressive and contagious laugh that means she must be cool,” he added wryly, adding that it might mean he would prevent further sanctions against Russia.

The White House responded to these words through the mouth of national security communications adviser John Kirby. He emphasized that Putin should not favor anyone and should stop talking about the American elections.

“The only person who should decide who will be the next president of the United States is the American people. The US would greatly appreciate it if he would a) stop talking about our election and b) stop meddling in it,” Kirby told the Russian leader .
