Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris for 2024 Presidency, Tackles Misinformation in Bold Statement

by time news

Taylor Swift has endorsed Kamala Harris for the presidency of the United States. After much speculation about whether the planet’s biggest pop star would lend her enormous influence to support the vice president’s campaign, Swift, who was named by Forbes last year as the fifth most powerful woman in the world (Harris was third), posted on social media her intention to vote for Harris in November just moments after the conclusion of this night’s presidential debate.

“I was recently made aware that an AI-generated ‘me’ falsely supporting Donald Trump’s presidential run was posted on his site,” reads the caption of a photo (from the TIME Person of the Year photoshoot) showing her holding her cat Benjamin Button. “This sparked my fears about AI and the dangers of misinformation spreading. It led me to the conclusion that I must be very transparent about my true intentions as a voter in this election. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

In the 2024 presidential election, I will vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.”

The singer-songwriter then described Harris as “a strong and capable leader” and praised running mate Tim Walz for “defending the rights of LGBTQ+ people, assisted reproductive technology, and women’s rights to make decisions about their bodies for decades.”

“I have done my research and made my choice,” she continued. “The research is all yours and it is up to you to choose. I also want to say, especially to first-time voters, to remember that you need to be registered to vote! I also find that it is much easier to vote early. I will put the link for you to register and see the dates and information on early voting.”

The kicker? Her signature: “With love and hope, Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady.”

It is a statement that many were waiting for, as tensions for the 2024 election have risen and Swift’s silence has grown heavier since friend Brittany Mahomes faced backlash for her apparent support of former president Donald Trump.

While Swift remained tight-lipped about her political beliefs early in her career for fear of alienating potential fans, in 2018 she endorsed two Democratic candidates in the midterm elections in her home state of Tennessee: “I have to be on the right side of history,” she said regarding that decision in her 2020 documentary, Miss Americana.
