On the way to unification? The European Parliament tonight (Tuesday) recommended that Ukraine apply for EU membership immediately, with the recommendation being accepted almost unanimously. In the recommendation the parliament also called on Russia to withdraw all its military forces from Ukraine.

The current recommendation comes after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zalansky addressed parliamentarians earlier today. In his remarks, he attacked Russia and demanded the assistance of Europe – which would also include the accession of his country as a member of the European Union.

“The country is in tragedy, we are fighting for our land, our freedom and our life,” Zlansky said. “No one will break us. Because we are Ukrainians. Ukraine is sacrificing its best sons in the hope that they will treat us as equals. Dozens of people were killed in Kharkov, this is the price of freedom. Russia is attacking children, 16 children were killed yesterday.”

Zalansky went on to call on the European Parliament to “prove that you are with us, prove that you are real Europeans.” At the end of the speech, Zalanski received thunderous applause from all present, and it was even reported that Zalanski’s translator burst into tears during the speech.
